Fanny and Jean appear to have an ideal marriage. Both are established in their careers, they live in a comfortable apartment in an upscale part of Paris, and they seem as close as when they first met. That balance is disturbed when Fanny runs into Alain, a man she knew in secondary school and has not seen for years. The two meet again soon after, and their renewed contact quickly becomes something more than friendship. Jean begins to sense that something has changed, and his suspicions set off a chain of events whose consequences reach beyond the affair itself. Woody Allen wrote and directed the film, which also touches on the part that chance and luck play in people's lives.
Lou de Laâge plays Fanny, with Melvil Poupaud as Jean and Niels Schneider as Alain. Valérie Lemercier, Elsa Zylberstein and Grégory Gadebois appear in supporting roles, among a credited cast of twenty-nine. The film was produced by Letty Aronson and Erika Aronson, and was shot in France in French, a departure from the English-language settings of much of Allen's work. It runs 96 minutes.
Released in September 2023, the film is the forty-eighth directed by Allen, following Rifkin's Festival (2020). Against a budget of 12 million dollars, it earned roughly 8 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.4 from about 12,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.2 from 453 votes. A critics' rating of 7/10 from 91 reviews places it higher than either audience score.
