The Tall Man
Short description
The Tall Man is a horror mystery set in Cold Rock, a struggling former mining town in the northern United States where children have gone missing for years without explanation. Residents blame a figure they call the Tall Man, said to take children from their homes and vanish. Julia Denning, a nurse in the town, treats the stories as local legend until her own young son disappears from his bed and she catches sight of a dark figure leaving the house with him. She sets out after them, determined to get her child back and to find out who the Tall Man is and what has happened to the town's missing children.
Pascal Laugier wrote and directed the film, his third feature after House of Voices in 2004 and Martyrs in 2008. Jessica Biel plays Julia, with Jodelle Ferland, Stephen McHattie, William B. Davis, Samantha Ferris and Colleen Wheeler among the cast. The production was a Canadian, American and French co-production made for about 18 million dollars, and it took roughly 7 million dollars worldwide, a fraction of its cost.
On IMDb it holds 5.9 out of 10 from around 45,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.1 out of 10 from about 1,300 votes. A critics' rating of 5.1 out of 10 from 30 reviews places it below both audience scores, though not sharply so.
What's left behind the scenes
- When the sheriff drives up to the building with Julia in the back seat, she manages to escape from the car simply by opening the door from the inside. Modern police cars are designed so that a suspect cannot escape, regardless of whether the door is locked or unlocked, as it only opens from the outside.
- During the dog attack, the hand that the dog bites changes (sometimes the left, sometimes the right).
- After the truck flips over, but before the passenger door opens, boot prints are clearly visible on the door.
- In the scene where a dog attacks Julia (Jessica Biel) as she opens the truck door, a heavy protective pad on her arm is clearly visible.
