Short description
Marty Faranan is a screenwriter in Los Angeles who is stuck on a script titled Seven Psychopaths. He has the title but no characters, and his friend Billy, an out-of-work actor who makes money stealing dogs and returning them for reward money, decides to help by finding real criminals for him to write about. Billy and his partner Hans take a Shih Tzu belonging to Charlie Costello, a gangster with a violent streak, and Marty finds himself drawn into the consequences of the theft.
Martin McDonagh wrote and directed the film, his second feature after In Bruges, and produced it with Graham Broadbent and Peter Czernin. Colin Farrell plays Marty, with Sam Rockwell as Billy, Woody Harrelson as Charlie, Christopher Walken as Hans, and Olga Kurylenko and Tom Waits among the credited cast.
The film was released in October 2012 and runs 110 minutes. Made on a budget of 15 million dollars, it took about 29 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.1 from roughly 287,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.8 from over 4,400 votes. A film critics' rating of 7.1 from 216 reviews places it close to the audience score on IMDb. McDonagh went on to direct Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, The Banshees of Inisherin and Wild Horse Nine.
What's left behind the scenes
- Upon learning that the film would feature rabbits, Tom Waits – a great animal lover – agreed to star in the film without even reading the script.
- In the cemetery scene, the tombstone behind which the hitman nicknamed "Jack of Diamonds" is hiding, bears the inscription "Rourke." Mickey Rourke was originally supposed to star in the film, but was replaced by Woody Harrelson due to disagreements with the director.
- The original screenplay paid significantly more attention to the climax of the film involving a bullet hitting a Shih Tzu dog named Bonnie. Censors deemed this animal cruelty, and the screenplay had to be changed. The character played by Sam Rockwell mentions at the cemetery that "animals can't die in movies, only women can."
- Marty and Billy are watching Takeshi Kitano’s film “Violent Cop” (1989) in a movie theater.
- The psychopath known as Zodiac, mentioned in the film, is a real serial killer who operated in California in the 1970s. He was never caught, and he sent letters to the police with his "signature" symbol – a crosshair, which is shown in this film in a scene at his home.
