A widowed single father and lawyer, Jim Grant, has spent three decades living under a false name, his past as a radical anti-war activist buried. That past resurfaces when another former member of the Weather Underground, Sharon Solarz, is arrested, drawing police and press attention to the group's unsolved history. An ambitious young journalist, Ben Shepard, follows the case and uncovers Grant's real identity. Grant goes on the run, pursued by the FBI and by the reporter, while trying to protect his daughter and clear himself.
Robert Redford directs and stars as Grant. The film is his eighth feature as director, following The Conspirator in 2011, in a line that began with Ordinary People in 1980. Lem Dobbs wrote the screenplay, and the credited cast numbers 62, with 183 credited crew. Shia LaBeouf plays Ben Shepard, and the cast includes Susan Sarandon as Sharon Solarz, Nick Nolte, Brendan Gleeson and Terrence Howard. Redford produced with Bill Holderman and Nicolas Chartier.
Made for about 2 million dollars, the film took roughly 20 million dollars worldwide, a return far above its cost. On IMDb it holds 6.4 out of 10 from around 37,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.2 from 806 votes. A critics' rating of 6.2 from 116 reviews places it close to the audience scores on both sites.
