The East

Sarah Moss, a former FBI agent, now works for Hiller Brood, a private intelligence firm serving corporate clients. Her assignment is to go undercover inside a secretive anarchist collective called The East, which carries out covert attacks against companies it accuses of environmental crimes and other harmful practices. Gaining the group's trust means taking part in its operations, and the longer she stays among its members, the more their grievances unsettle her loyalties. Her growing bond with Benji, one of the group's leaders, deepens the conflict between her employer's interests and the people she is deceiving.

The film was directed by Zal Batmanglij, who wrote the screenplay with Brit Marling. It followed his 2011 feature Sound of My Voice. Marling plays Sarah, with Alexander Skarsgård as Benji and Elliot Page as Izzy; Toby Kebbell, Shiloh Fernandez and Aldis Hodge also appear. Ridley Scott was among the producers.

Released in 2013, the film runs 116 minutes and was made for about 7 million dollars. It took roughly 3 million dollars worldwide, a fraction of its budget. On IMDb it holds 6.8/10 from around 54,000 votes, on TMDB 6.6/10 from about 889 votes, and its critics' rating stands at 6.7/10 from 147 reviews, placing professional and audience assessments close together.
