Short description

Red Planet is a science fiction thriller set in a future where Earth is dying and humanity's survival depends on finding a new home. An American crew travels to Mars to investigate whether the planet can support a colony, following earlier missions that never returned. Personal and ideological disagreements divide the astronauts, and when technical failures force a landing on the surface, the team loses much of its equipment and its link to Earth. Stranded in a hostile environment, the survivors must rely on one another while a robotic exploration unit brought along for the mission turns against them.

Antony Hoffman directed the film from a screenplay by Jonathan Lemkin and Chuck Pfarrer. It was released in 2000 and starred Val Kilmer as Robby Gallagher, Carrie-Anne Moss as Commander Kate Bowman, Benjamin Bratt, Tom Sizemore, Simon Baker and Terence Stamp. The production was a large one, with a budget of 80 million US dollars and around 150 credited crew members.

The film performed poorly at the box office, taking in roughly 33 million dollars worldwide against that budget, and audiences have not embraced it since. On TMDB it holds a rating of 5.7 out of 10 from over 1,200 votes. Critics were harsher still, giving it 3.9 out of 10 across 103 reviews.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Most of the scenes taking place on Mars were filmed in the Jordanian desert.
  • The shot of Earth taken from space, appearing at the beginning of the film, was borrowed from 'Contact' (1997). However, for 'Red Planet,' it was flipped, and it is impossible to see Earth from space in that orientation.
  • Unlike other science fiction films, this film realistically depicts what happens to fire in zero gravity.
  • The film's working title, 'Mars,' had to be changed to avoid confusion with the film 'Mission to Mars' (2000).
  • The surname of Kate Bowman (Carrie-Anne Moss) is a reference to Stanley Kubrick's film '2001: A Space Odyssey' (1968), in which the commander of the spaceship was Dave Bowman.
  • The film competed with another movie about Mars released around the same time – 'Mission to Mars' (2000).
  • Thomas Sizemore's character mentions his girlfriend named Faith. In 'Strange Days,' Sizemore's character had an affair with his friend's lover, who was also named Faith.
