The History of Sound

Two music students at the Boston Conservatory form a connection in 1917 through their shared interest in folk music. After some time passes, Lionel and David reunite to travel through the remote areas of Maine, where they work to collect and preserve traditional songs and the voices of their fellow Americans.

Directed by Oliver Hermanus, this drama is the fourth feature in his filmography following Beauty, Moffie, and Living. The screenplay was written by Ben Shattuck. The film stars Paul Mescal as Lionel Worthing and Josh O'Connor as David White, with Chris Cooper appearing as an older version of Lionel.
