Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie
Short description
Six teenagers who protect the world as the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers face an enemy unlike any they have met before. Ivan Ooze, a villain imprisoned for thousands of years, breaks free and targets their mentor, Zordon. Stripped of the abilities that let them transform and pilot their giant fighting machines, the Rangers travel to another planet in search of a lost source of power. There they train under the warrior Dulcea, who teaches them an ancient fighting art, while their teammates' homeworld remains under threat.
The film was directed by Bryan Spicer, the first of three features he made, followed by For Richer or Poorer and Sudbury. Arne Olsen wrote the screenplay, and Suzanne Todd and Haim Saban produced. The cast brings the television roles to the screen: Jason David Frank as Tommy, the White Ranger; Amy Jo Johnson as Kimberly, the Pink Ranger; David Yost as Billy, the Blue Ranger; Steve Cardenas as Rocky, the Red Ranger; Johnny Yong Bosch as Adam, the Black Ranger; and Karan Ashley as Aisha, the Yellow Ranger, among 25 credited performers.
Released in June 1995, the film cost about 15 million dollars and returned roughly 66 million worldwide, a strong multiple of its budget. Audiences have been mixed: on IMDb it holds 5.3 from 32,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.9 from 794. A critics' rating of 4.2 from 40 reviews is lower than both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- To ensure the color of his tongue matched the color of his body in the image, Paul Freeman would fill his mouth with blackcurrant juice before filming, hold it there for a while, and then spit it out.
- Johnny Yong Bosch and Jason David Frank performed almost all the stunts themselves.
- While preparing for his role, Paul Freeman spent 7 hours in the makeup chair every morning.
- Each Ranger's costume weighed almost 20 kg. Filming often lasted 10 hours a day, and the actors worked in the costumes the entire time.
- The set with the Temple of Power built on it was the largest of all used in the making of the film. It featured a working waterfall, a pool, and huge doors that opened onto the Pyramid of Power. The set occupied the entire territory of Warner Roadshow Movie World Studios in Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia.
- Wearing the Alpha 5 suit and helmet, actress Peta-Marie Rixon could see or hear nothing, and she had nothing to breathe with. A breathing tube, similar to those used to supply oxygen to aquariums, had to be run into the suit.
- Except for moments where the Power Rangers appear on screen without their helmets, their costumes are actually worn by stunt performers who are not credited.
- An invitation was placed in one of Sydney's newspapers, urging fans to "come to the harbor and see the fireworks with the Mighty Rangers themselves." Fans responded to the invitation. In reality, the filmmakers needed crowds for shooting the final scene, and paying extras would have been a significant expense.
- In the original script, the Mighty Rangers were supposed to fight monstrous creatures created by Ivan. The costumes built for these creatures didn't work very well and looked even worse, so the script had to be rewritten to have the Mighty Rangers battle entirely different monsters. However, the "rejected" monster costumes were later repurposed, appearing in the "Return of the Green Ranger" storyline in the television series.
