Calvin Sims is a small-statured thief just out of prison, and he wants to leave crime behind. His former boss, a mobster named Walken, offers him a large sum for one last job: stealing a valuable diamond. Calvin teams with his brother Percy, and the theft succeeds, but the police give chase. To keep the stone hidden, Calvin slips it into the handbag of Vanessa Edwards, a corporate executive he passes during his escape. Learning that Vanessa and her husband Darryl have been trying to have a child, Percy talks Calvin into posing as an abandoned baby and leaving him on the couple's doorstep. Darryl and Vanessa take the "infant" in for the weekend and grow attached enough to consider adopting him, while Calvin uses his stay to search for the diamond and Walken pressures Darryl to hand it over.
Keenen Ivory Wayans directed the film, his sixth feature after I'm Gonna Git You Sucka, A Low Down Dirty Shame, two Scary Movie instalments and White Chicks. He wrote it with Marlon and Shawn Wayans, who also produced; Marlon plays Calvin, Shawn plays Darryl, and Kerry Washington plays Vanessa, with John Witherspoon, Tracy Morgan and Lochlyn Munro in supporting roles.
Made for a reported 64 million dollars, the comedy took about 104 million worldwide, a modest return against its cost. Audiences were unenthusiastic: on IMDb it holds 4.6 from roughly 65,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.9 from a much smaller sample. A critics' score of 3.3 from 90 reviews places it well below even the audience verdict.
