Short description

Topper Harley has left his military past behind and is living quietly in a monastery, where he has found a measure of inner peace. The CIA has other plans. A series of rescue missions in the Middle East has gone wrong, with each team sent to recover the previous one also taken captive, and the president wants Topper to lead another attempt. He refuses at first, but when Colonel Denton Walters is himself captured, Topper is drawn back into action. The mission also brings an unexpected reunion with Ramada.

The film is a comedy directed by Jim Abrahams, who wrote the screenplay with Pat Proft. It is the seventh feature he directed, following Hot Shots! two years earlier, and Charlie Sheen returns as Topper, with Lloyd Bridges as President Tug Benson, Valeria Golino as Ramada, Richard Crenna as Colonel Walters, Rowan Atkinson and Miguel Ferrer. It was released in May 1993 and runs 88 minutes.

Made for about 25 million dollars, the film took in roughly 134 million worldwide, a strong return for a comedy of its scale. It holds a 6.6 rating on IMDb from about 103,000 votes and a 6.5 on TMDB from a much smaller base of voters. The critics' score of 5.7 from 34 reviews places it below both audience measures, though not far off them.

What's left behind the scenes

  • In this film, Richard Crenna played a parody of his own character from the John Rambo film series – Colonel Trautman.
  • "Rambo 3" entered the Guinness Book of Records at the time for the number of people killed on screen. Topper Harley successfully breaks this record.
  • As part of the film's promotion, a story about the filming of the second part, "Hearts of Hot Shots Part Deux: A Filmmaker's Apology," was filmed, whose title played on the title of the documentary "Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse," which tells about the filming of the film "Apocalypse Now."
  • To prepare for the role, Charlie Sheen did physical exercises for 8 hours a day because he didn't want his character to be laughed at at the premiere.
  • The word “deux” (two) in the title is French. “Deux”’s pronunciation parodies the English “do.” The phrase “Just deux it” (Just do it) on the cover could be translated into Russian as “Just do it.”
  • In the episode parodying “Apocalypse Now,” the boat with Charlie Sheen on board diverges on opposite courses from the boat with Martin Sheen. At that moment, they simultaneously shout to each other, “I liked you in “Wall Street!” which is a reference to the film in which they starred together. Before this moment, two films are also parodied. First, Charlie Sheen quotes his own character from “Platoon,” then he is interrupted by Martin Sheen quoting his character from “Apocalypse Now.”
