Orlando
Short description
Orlando is a drama and fantasy film adapted from Virginia Woolf's novel. In 1600, a young English nobleman obsessed with poetry catches the eye of Queen Elizabeth I, who grants him land and fortune on one unusual condition: that he never grow old. He obeys, and over the following centuries he moves through English history without aging, serving as ambassador abroad, falling in love, and eventually waking one day to find himself a woman, living on into the present.
Sally Potter directed and wrote the screenplay; Christopher Sheppard produced. Tilda Swinton plays the title role, with Billy Zane as Shelmerdine, Lothaire Bluteau as The Khan, John Wood as Archduke Harry, Charlotte Valandrey as Sasha and Heathcote Williams as Nick Greene. The film came second among the seven features Potter directed, following Combines and preceding The Man Who Cried.
Made for about 4 million dollars, it took roughly 5 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.1 out of 10 from around 21,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.9 out of 10 from around 400. A critics' score of 6.8 out of 10 across 65 reviews places it close to the two audience figures, which suggests a reasonably consistent response rather than a sharp split between reviewers and viewers.

Sally Potter organized a banquet in the desert to persuade the local Russian authorities to grant permission to use a nearby castle for filming. During the banquet, guests were offered Russian drinks, but none of the film crew were willing to drink them undiluted.
