The Chinese Feast

The Chinese Feast follows Sun, a low-level gangster who wants out of the criminal world. His plan is to move to Canada and start over as a chef, both to leave his old life behind and to be near the woman he loves. There is one problem: he cannot cook. Hoping to build the skills he needs, he takes a position under a respected master at a top Hong Kong restaurant, where the work and the training prove far harder than he expected. A cooking challenge against a rival restaurant raises the stakes, and Sun, his teacher and the teacher's daughter end up depending on each other to see it through.

Tsui Hark directed the film, the fifteenth of the thirty-one features he has directed in chronological order, arriving between Once Upon a Time in China V and The Blade. The screenplay is by Kai-Chi Yuen, Philip Cheng Chung-Tai and Hark, with Raymond Wong, Hark and Li Ning producing. Leslie Cheung plays Sun, Anita Yuen plays Au Ka Wai, and Law Kar-Ying plays Au Siu Fung; Kenny Bee, Vincent Zhao Wenzhuo and Xinxin Xiong also appear among a credited cast of fifty-five. Released in January 1995 and running about a hundred minutes, the comedy blends romance with its kitchen setting. On IMDb it holds a 6.7 rating from around 1,600 votes, and on TMDB a 6.6 from roughly 60 votes.
