Short description
Evolution is a 2001 science fiction comedy set in the Arizona desert, where a meteorite crashes carrying single-celled alien organisms. A biology teacher, Dr. Ira Kane, and his geologist colleague, Prof. Harry Phineas Block, collect samples from the impact site and find that the microbes are multiplying and evolving at an extraordinary rate. The army quickly seizes the crater and shuts the two men out, placing them under the authority of Dr. Allison Reed, a CDC epidemiologist. As the alien life grows into increasingly large and dangerous creatures, the scientists must work alongside Wayne Grey, a trainee firefighter who witnessed the meteor's fall, if they are to have any chance of containing the threat.
Ivan Reitman directed, and the screenplay is credited to David Diamond, David Weissman and Don Jakoby. It is the twelfth of the fifteen films Reitman directed, following Six Days Seven Nights and preceding My Super Ex-Girlfriend. David Duchovny plays Ira Kane, Julianne Moore plays Allison Reed, Orlando Jones plays Harry Block, and Seann William Scott plays Wayne Grey, with Ted Levine as General Russell Woodman and Ty Burrell as Colonel Flemming among a credited cast of 28.
Produced by Columbia Pictures, DreamWorks Pictures and The Montecito Picture Company, the film had a budget of 80 million US dollars and took about 98 million worldwide, a modest return against its cost. On IMDb it holds 6.1 out of 10 from around 143,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.1 out of 10 from roughly 2,600 votes. A film critics' rating of 5.1 out of 10 from 139 reviews places it below the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The concept of the chemical element selenium being present in 'Head and Shoulders' shampoo, which plays an important role in the plot, is technically correct. While regular 'Head and Shoulders' does not contain selenium, a special 'Head and Shoulders' shampoo for intensive hair care actually consists of approximately 1% selenium sulfide.
- Filming took place from October 19, 2000, to February 2001 in the states of California and Arizona.
- Actor Kevin Dunn appeared as a doctor in an unused alternate ending, where it was revealed that Dr. Block was infected with a giant alien dragonfly that had laid its eggs inside him.
- When the Governor of Arizona presents awards to the film's heroes, Nadine with a 'Miss Arizona' sash can be seen in the background. Earlier in the film, she mentioned that she dreamed of winning the 'Miss Arizona' title.
- The 'Head and Shoulders' shampoo commercial in the film featuring three main characters was the idea of director Ivan Reitman's son.
- For the role in 'Evolution', David Duchovny turned down a supporting role in George Lucas's much more prestigious film 'Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones' (2002).
- According to the original concept, the film was intended to be a serious sci-fi thriller, and screenwriters David Diamond and David Weissman were brought in to rework the project into a comedy. Surprisingly, the original screenwriter, Don Jacoby, was so delighted with the changes that he continued to work on the film alongside the new writers.
- Since filming took place in December, DreamWorks studio made an official request to local authorities and residents to delay hanging Christmas decorations and lights until the last possible moment. Later, the studio paid overtime to city service workers to complete all the work in a short timeframe and give the town its festive look.
- The slight clumsiness of Julianne Moore's character was the actress's own idea.
