Alex Cross is a Detroit police detective and psychologist who works alongside his partner and friend Tommy Kane and a newer colleague, Monica Ashe. When a woman is found murdered and mutilated, the case points toward a killer who leaves drawings at his crime scenes and who appears to be targeting a powerful businessman, Gilles Mercier. As Cross uses his psychological training to anticipate the killer's moves, the investigation draws the detective and his family into the path of the man the press calls Picasso, a contract killer who takes pleasure in his work. The film is based on James Patterson's novel "Cross," part of the long-running series featuring the character.
Rob Cohen directed the film, which came out in 2012 and sits between The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor and The Boy Next Door in his filmography. The screenplay was written by Marc Moss and Kerry Williamson, and James Patterson is among the producers. Tyler Perry plays Alex Cross, with Edward Burns as Tommy Kane, Matthew Fox as Picasso, Rachel Nichols as Monica Ashe, Carmen Ejogo as Maria Cross and Jean Reno as Gilles Mercier.
Made for a budget of 45 million dollars, the film took in about 30 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.2 out of 10 from roughly 37,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.1 out of 10 from around 793 votes. A critics' rating of 3.6 out of 10 from 127 reviews places it below both audience scores.
