Short description

Joe and Angela are a married couple whose relationship has grown strained and routine over time. In an attempt to change their dynamic, Angela invites their mysterious upstairs neighbors, Hawk and Pina, over for dinner. What begins as a standard social gathering evolves into an unpredictable evening as the two couples share intimate details and explore repressed emotions, forcing Joe and Angela to confront the fragility of their marriage.

The film was directed by Olivia Wilde, marking her third feature following Booksmart and Don't Worry Darling. The cast features Seth Rogen and Olivia Wilde as the struggling couple, with Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton playing the enigmatic neighbors. Produced by A24, Annapurna Pictures, FilmNation Entertainment, and Permut Presentations, the project was written by Rashida Jones and Will McCormack.

With a budget of 12 million USD, the movie was a commercial success, earning 56 million USD worldwide. It has been well received by audiences, maintaining a 7.8 rating on IMDb from nearly 30,000 votes and a 7.3 rating on TMDB from 564 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The apartment sets were constructed in a studio; the interior design ideas were borrowed from real apartments that the filmmakers had seen in San Francisco.
  • Director Olivia Wilde (who also played Angela) decided to cast Seth Rogen as Joe after appearing in his series 'The Movie Studio' (2025-).
  • Before the final credits, the words 'Dedicated to Diane' appear on the screen. This refers to Diane Keaton, who starred alongside Olivia Wilde in Jessie Nelson's romantic comedy 'Love the Coopers' (2015). Speaking at the film's premiere in Los Angeles, Wilde shared a few warm words about Keaton.
  • Amy Adams, Paul Rudd, and Tessa Thompson were initially part of the cast, but due to delays, they left the project, forcing the filmmakers to cast other actors.
