Short description

The Dentist is a 1996 American horror thriller about Dr. Alan Feinstone, a wealthy dentist with a successful practice, an elegant home and a beautiful wife named Brooke. His orderly life comes apart when he learns that Brooke is having an affair with the man who cleans the family pool. The discovery pushes him into paranoia and madness, and his obsession with cleanliness and control turns violent, extending from his wife and the man he sees as his rival to the patients and assistants in his own surgery.

Brian Yuzna directed the film, the sixth of the seven features listed in his filmography, arriving after Society, Bride of Re-Animator, Return of the Living Dead III and Necronomicon and before The Dentist 2 and Beyond Re-Animator. The screenplay is credited to Stuart Gordon, Dennis Paoli and Charles Finch, with Pierre David producing for Trimark Pictures and Image Organization. Corbin Bernsen leads as Feinstone, alongside Linda Hoffman as Brooke, Michael Stadvec as Matt, Ken Foree and Tony Noakes as two detectives, and Molly Hagan as Jessica.

The film runs 92 minutes. Its reception was limited: on IMDb and TMDB, audience scores sit in the middle range, with a TMDB rating of 5.5 out of 10 from 345 votes, while a small set of critics' reviews averages 3 out of 10.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The studio executives completely disliked the script, so the film's production was only approved a year after the application was submitted. In the first version of the script, the entire movie took place in a single day. The script was subsequently reworked, and the events shown in the film began to span more than two days. Later, Stuart Gordon was hired to work on the script, and the resulting version was further refined by Charles Finch.
  • A stuffed goat served as the dead dog. Its head was turned away to hide the horns, and its body was smeared with fake blood. This happened on the very first day of filming.
  • The film's budget was so small that whenever director Brian Yuzna disliked something in the sets, the producers simply refused to pay for the changes to the scenery and props, and Yuzna would use his own credit card to purchase what was needed. Fortunately, the prop department managed to borrow everything necessary, so as it turned out, it didn't actually cost Yuzna anything.
  • There was only one prop mouth (larger than a real mouth), so the teeth had to be changed when filming different patients.
  • Almost all of the murders depicted in the film have their roots in the movies of Alfred Hitchcock.
