A Guy Thing

Paul Morse is a man with good intentions, and that is precisely what gets him into trouble. His friends arrange a bachelor party before his wedding to Karen, and he vows to behave himself so he can face her with a clear conscience. He wakes the next morning with almost no memory of the night before and a woman named Becky beside him. He believes he has been unfaithful, and his attempts to hide it from Karen only multiply into a chain of misunderstandings that grows harder to contain. Becky turns out not to be a stranger to the family, and Paul's brother and a jealous ex-boyfriend complicate matters further.

Chris Koch directed the film, his second feature after Snow Day (2000), from a screenplay by Greg Glienna, Pete Schwaba and Matt Tarses. Jason Lee plays Paul, with Selma Blair as Karen, Julia Stiles as Becky, Shawn Hatosy, Lochlyn Munro and James Brolin in supporting roles. The production, backed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and David Ladd Films, carried a budget of about 20 million dollars and returned roughly 17 million worldwide, a modest result against its cost.

On IMDb and elsewhere the audience response has been middling to negative, holding around 5.9 out of 10 on TMDB from just under 400 votes, while a critics' rating of 4.1 out of 10 from 104 reviews places professional opinion considerably lower than the general audience. The film remains a light romantic comedy built on escalating deception.
