Short description
Wicked: For Good continues the story of Elphaba and Glinda after their paths have diverged. Elphaba, now branded the Wicked Witch of the West, lives in exile in the forests of Oz, where she keeps fighting for the rights of the animals whose voices have been silenced and tries to expose the truth about the Wizard. Glinda has become the public face of goodness, living in the Emerald City palace and enjoying her popularity under Madame Morrible's direction. As Glinda's fame grows and she prepares to marry Prince Fiyero, she is troubled by the rift with her former friend, and her attempts to reconcile Elphaba with the Wizard fail, deepening the conflict. The two women must eventually face each other with honesty and compassion.
The film is the second part of a two-part adaptation of the Broadway musical, following Wicked (2024) as the twelfth of thirteen features directed by Jon M. Chu, with Oh, the Places You'll Go! (2028) coming next. Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox wrote the screenplay, and Marc Platt and David Stone produced. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande return as Elphaba and Glinda, alongside Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Yeoh, Jonathan Bailey and Ethan Slater. Made for 150 million USD, it grossed 541 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.7/10 from 61,000 votes and on TMDB 6.6/10 from 1,156 votes, close to the critics' 6.5/10 from 351 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- Dorothy’s face is never shown in the film. Director John M. Chu believed that no one could do as well as Judy Garland in the role, and that this wasn’t a film about her at all, but rather the story of Elphaba and Glinda (played by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, respectively). Garland played Dorothy in Victor Fleming and King Vidor’s classic musical "The Wizard of Oz" (1939).
- Glinda’s purple dress is a reference to the dress worn by this character as performed by Billie Burke in Victor Fleming’s adventure musical "The Wizard of Oz" (1939) and Glinda's dress in the stage production of "Wicked."
- The final scene references the famous poster for the Broadway production of "Wicked," which depicts Ariana Grande as Glinda whispering something in Cynthia Erivo’s ear as Elphaba.
- The original musical shows how Marissa Bode's character is given the ability to walk because Elphaba enchanted her silver slippers. In this adaptation of the story for the screen, this character does not walk, but floats in the air (in reality, the actress is unable to move independently).
