The Bling Ring
Short description
The Bling Ring follows a group of teenagers in Los Angeles who are drawn to celebrity culture and the luxury brands that come with it. Using the internet to track when stars will be away from home, they break into the houses of well-known figures and take clothing, jewellery and other high-end items. What starts as a thrill among friends grows into a repeated pattern of thefts, with the group gaining attention as the crimes accumulate.
Sofia Coppola directed and wrote the screenplay, and produced the film with Roman Coppola and Youree Henley. It sits seventh in her filmography, arriving between Somewhere and A Very Murray Christmas. Katie Chang, Emma Watson, Taissa Farmiga, Claire Julien and Israel Broussard play the young burglars, with Leslie Mann as a parent. The production involved companies in several countries, including American Zoetrope and StudioCanal, on a budget of about 15 million dollars; worldwide takings reached roughly 19 million.
Audience scores are modest, at 5.6 on IMDb from around 96,000 votes and 5.4 on TMDB from a few thousand. A critics' rating of 6.3 from 207 reviews places professional assessment somewhat above those viewer figures.
