Under the Skin
Short description
An extraterrestrial being takes the form of an attractive woman named Laura to lure men across Scotland. Driving through Glasgow and surrounding areas, she picks up unsuspecting strangers and leads them to their deaths to serve the needs of her own species. As she continues her mission, the alien begins to experience doubts and develops an unexpected attraction to a human man. This surreal story is based on the novel by Michel Faber.
Directed by Jonathan Glazer, the film follows his previous works Sexy Beast and Birth. It features a cast that includes Scarlett Johansson. Produced by companies in the United Kingdom, Mexico, the United States, and Switzerland, the production had a budget of 13 million USD and earned 7 million USD at the worldwide box office.
The film has received a moderate response from general viewers, holding a 6.3 rating on IMDb from 170,000 votes and a 6.1 rating on TMDB from 3,948 votes. These audience scores are lower than the rating provided by film critics, which stands at 7.9 based on 259 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- Adam Pearson, who plays the disfigured man, broke his leg while on his way to an audition after being hit by a taxi. Director Jonathan Glazer held the audition for him the following day in the hospital.
- It took almost 10 years to make the film. One of the early script versions featured a Scottish couple, who turned out to be disguised aliens. Brad Pitt was considered for the role of the husband in this couple.
- The men that Scarlett Johansson's character lures into the van were not actors. Jonathan Glazer installed hidden cameras in the van and told the men they were in a film after the scenes had been shot.
- A shot of Scarlett Johansson falling, captured by paparazzi, became an internet meme. The scene was filmed with hidden cameras, and it only became clear after the movie's release that the fall was intentional.
- When Laura walks down the street, a reflection of a crew member in a high-visibility vest can be seen, helping the camera follow the heroine.
