Zero Dark Thirty follows the CIA's long effort to locate Osama bin Laden, the al-Qaeda leader behind the September 2001 attacks. The story centres on Maya, a young intelligence officer who joins the search soon after the attacks and stays with it for roughly a decade, through dead ends and setbacks, as she builds a case for where bin Laden may be hiding. The film covers the planning and the night-time raid that finally reaches him.
Kathryn Bigelow directed, working from a screenplay by Mark Boal, who also produced alongside Bigelow and Megan Ellison. It was Bigelow's seventh feature, arriving after The Hurt Locker, and her second collaboration with Boal on material drawn from recent American conflict. Jessica Chastain plays Maya, with Jason Clarke, Joel Edgerton, Jennifer Ehle, Mark Strong and Kyle Chandler among the cast. The production cost about 40 million dollars and took roughly 133 million worldwide.
Reaction was strong across the board. On IMDb the film holds 7.4 from around 340,000 votes, and on TMDB 7 out of 10 from about 5,000 votes, while critics gave it 8.6 out of 10 across some 304 reviews, a notably warmer assessment than the general audience scores. The film runs 157 minutes and was made in the United States with the United Arab Emirates among its production countries.
