Himizu

Himizu follows Yuichi Sumida, a fourteen-year-old who runs his parents' small boat rental near a nondescript lake and wants only to live an ordinary, decent life. His mother neglects him and eventually leaves; his father appears mainly when he needs money, and is violent. His classmate Keiko Chazawa is infatuated with him, though he keeps his distance. Her home life is no better, dominated by an abusive mother. The story unfolds in the aftermath of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, and the two teenagers, both from damaged families, are drawn together as the ground around them gives way, sharing hardship and turning to each other for support. Violence and criminal pressure close in on Yuichi as well.

Sion Sono directed and wrote the screenplay, his tenth film as director in chronological order, arriving between Guilty of Romance in 2011 and Why Don't You Play in Hell? in 2013. The film runs 130 minutes and was released in January 2012.
