Short description
Los Angeles police sergeant Joe Bomowski leads an independent, somewhat messy bachelor life until his mother, Tutti, arrives from New Jersey for a visit. She quickly takes charge of his home and his habits, and sets about meddling in his personal life and his work. When she witnesses a murder, she insists on getting involved in the investigation, and Joe reluctantly gains a new partner: his own mother.
The film is an action comedy directed by Roger Spottiswoode, the sixth of the fourteen features he has directed in chronological order, coming between Air America and And the Band Played On. Sylvester Stallone plays Joe, with Estelle Getty as Tutti, JoBeth Williams as Lieutenant Gwen Harper, and Roger Rees, Martin Ferrero and Gailard Sartain in supporting roles. The screenplay is by William Davies, William Osborne and Blake Snyder, and the producers include Ivan Reitman. It runs 87 minutes.
Released in February 1992, the film took about 71 million dollars worldwide, a solid return for a comedy of its scale. Audiences have been tepid on it: it holds a rating of 4.4 out of 10 on IMDb from roughly 47,000 votes, and 5.4 out of 10 on TMDB from a much smaller pool of about 1,200 votes. Critics were harsher still, giving it 3.4 out of 10 across 30 reviews, well below even the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Stallone considers this film the worst of his career.
- Estelle Getty (1923-2008) categorically refused to appear in the film because it would feature weapons. The filmmakers had to lie, telling her that the film would not contain any weapons in order to finally get her to sign the contract.
- In one interview, Sylvester Stallone admitted that as soon as he heard that Arnold Schwarzenegger had expressed interest in the role, he immediately called his agent and ordered him to secure the role at all costs. Only many years later did he find out that Schwarzenegger was only pretending to want to star in the film, counting on Stallone’s reaction.
- When Estelle Getty's character shows people photographs of her son, the black-and-white picture of the boy in a plaid shirt genuinely depicts Sylvester Stallone. The same photograph is also shown in John G. Avildsen's (1935-2017) film "Rocky" (1976).
- Filming took place in California from May 14 to August 9, 1991.
