Short description

Blanche believes she has found the ideal partner when she meets Grégoire. After a passionate start, she moves away from her family and twin sister, Rose, to begin a new life with him. Over time, the relationship turns dark as Blanche becomes trapped by Grégoire's possessive and dangerous nature. Struggling with fear and shame, she finds herself under the control of a man whose obsession creates a perilous situation.

This French drama, romance, and thriller was directed by Valérie Donzelli, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Audrey Diwan. It is the second of three films directed by Donzelli listed in the records, following Notre Dame and preceding At Work. The movie stars Virginie Efira in the dual roles of Blanche and Rose Renard, alongside Melvil Poupaud as Grégoire Lamoureux. The cast also includes Dominique Reymond, Romane Bohringer, Virginie Ledoyen, and Marie Rivière.

Produced by companies including Canal+ and France 2 Cinéma, the film had a budget of 6 million USD and earned 5 million USD at the worldwide box office. It has received generally positive feedback from viewers, with a rating of 6.5/10 on IMDb from 3,500 votes and 6.9/10 on TMDB from 344 votes. These audience scores are closely aligned with the film critics' rating of 6.6/10 based on 18 reviews.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Before writing the screenplay based on the novel by Eric Reinhardt, director and screenwriter Valérie Donzelli had already planned to invite Virginie Efira to play Blanche, so she gave her the book in advance to read. Efira read the novel and agreed to work with Donzelli. Donzelli had no one in mind for the role of Grégoire; Melvil Poupaud joined the project much later.
