Short description
Andie Anderson is a magazine journalist in New York who is handed an unusual assignment: she must write a first-hand article about the things women do that drive men away. That requires finding a man, making him fall for her, and then behaving so badly that he ends the relationship. She settles on Benjamin Barry, an advertising executive. Unbeknownst to her, Ben has made a bet with his boss that he can make a woman fall in love with him within the same ten-day window, with a major account riding on the outcome. Neither knows about the other's arrangement, and the two spend the days together while pursuing opposite goals.
Donald Petrie directed the film, which came after Miss Congeniality and Welcome to Mooseport in his filmography. Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey play Andie and Ben, with supporting turns from Adam Goldberg, Bebe Neuwirth, Michael Michele, and Shalom Harlow. Burr Steers, Kristen Buckley and Brian Regan wrote the screenplay, and Lynda Obst, Robert Evans and Christine Forsyth-Peters produced. Made for about 50 million dollars, it took in roughly 178 million worldwide, a strong return.
Audience response has been warmer than the critical one: on IMDb it holds 6.5 from around 318,000 votes, on TMDB 6.9 from a much smaller base of 4,602, while the critics' rating stands at 5.4 from 150 reviews.
