What's left behind the scenes
- Sam Elliott's character tells the immigrants that they are mistaken to use oxen instead of horses to pull their wagons. The fact is that during the journey west, pioneers typically used oxen for this purpose rather than horses—despite the opposite usually being shown in Westerns. Oxen move slower, but they are better suited for such journeys because they are stronger, more durable, and less demanding. Moreover, they have better footing, pull loads up slopes more effectively, are less skittish, and upon reaching their final destination, are better suited for farm life.
- The characters played by Sam Elliott and Lamonica Garrett wear Pinkerton badges. This is a private security and detective agency founded in the US in 1850; it exists to this day under the name 'Pinkerton Security.' In 1871, the United States government suffered from a shortage of law enforcement officers in some Western territories, and therefore entrusted the maintenance of law and order there specifically to the Pinkerton agency. Pinkerton agents periodically provided security for wagon trains heading to the Wild West.
- The character played by Billy Bob Thornton (real name Timothy Isaiah Courtright, 1848-1887) was killed in a shootout in front of the White Elephant saloon. Since then, every year on this very day, reenactors reproduce this shootout and, consequently, his death in front of the saloon.
