What's left behind the scenes
- Filming began on a large ranch near the town of Darby, Montana, where John Dutton's home is located according to the plot. Numerous locations in Utah and Montana were subsequently used. Additionally, three soundstages at Utah Film Studios in Park City, Utah, were utilized.
- Filming for the first season of the series began in August 2017, and production continued until the end of December 2017.
- The races shown in the series have been held regularly in Sheridan, Wyoming, since 1931. The tradition was established during the height of the Great Depression. It symbolizes how Native American tribes stole horses from one another during periods of intertribal warfare.
- For the filming, screenwriter, director, and producer Taylor Sheridan brought his own horses from Wyoming.
- The scenes with the grizzly bear are based on real incidents involving tourists who, after getting lost, found themselves in such danger. Sheridan himself once witnessed park visitors trying to get closer to a grizzly bear that had entered the park, while a ranger had to keep them at a reasonably safe distance.
- When it first became known that Kelsey Asbille would play the protagonist's wife, a woman from a Native American tribe, it sparked controversy. Kelsey Asbille (full name Kelsey Asbille Chow) is of mixed Chinese-American descent; she claimed to be of Cherokee descent, but representatives of the tribe officially denied this claim. Furthermore, following the casting for the television series 'Yellowstone,' prominent Native American representatives called for a boycott of the project and urged all actors of Native American descent not to appear in the series.
