What's left behind the scenes
- The lunar module shown in several episodes was the real deal. It was originally intended for the Apollo 18 expedition (planned for July 1973, but never realized for financial reasons). Regardless, the lunar module was preserved and subsequently used during the filming of this miniseries. It is currently in a museum. In some scenes, the viewer sees a bus-like vehicle used to transport astronauts to the launch pad at Cape Canaveral. This vehicle shown in the miniseries is also authentic—it is the exact one used to deliver astronauts to the launch pad.
- The so-called 'white room' near the landing site (a cleanroom with a specially purified atmosphere) shown in the miniseries is authentic. It was discovered by chance in a forgotten NASA warehouse and used during filming.
- To simulate low gravity on the Moon, the actors held large helium balloons attached to their spacesuits by long wires. The wires were digitally removed during post-production.
