What's left behind the scenes

  • Kelly Martin, who played student Lucy Knight, left the project, explaining that it was difficult for her to act in a medical series following the death of her sister.
  • Doug Ross often lowers his head, creating the impression (depending on the scene) that the character is awkward, lost in thought, or simply smirking at his own thoughts. This was not written into the plot. George Clooney simply wrote his lines (especially complex medical terms) on slips of paper and anything else that happened to be at hand to refresh his memory.
  • Gloria Reuben and Eric Palladino, who played paramedic Boule and Dr. Malucci, left the project, believing that the screenwriters undervalued their characters and that they could have contributed much more to the development of the plot.
  • The actors who served as directors for individual episodes were Anthony Edwards, Paul McCrane, Laura Innes, and Eric La Salle.
  • Due to a lack of time and money to set up a filming location and build sets, the pilot episode was filmed in an abandoned hospital in Los Angeles that had closed in 1991.
  • Vondie Curtis-Hall played two characters in the series. In the first season, he appeared as a transgender person (a role that earned him an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series). Later, he played Carla's husband.
  • Originally, George Clooney's character was intended to be named Tom Ross, and Julianna Margulies' character was to be named Barb Hathaway.
  • Actress and singer Lisa Zane auditioned for the role of Dr. Susan Lewis. She later played a friend of the character portrayed by George Clooney.
  • All the actors from the first season appeared in the 15th and final season: Anthony Edwards, Noah Wyle, George Clooney, Eriq La Salle, Sherry Stringfield, and Julianna Margulies.
  • The record for the longest romantic relationship in the series belongs to Doug and Carol.
  • Some of the surgeries shown in the series are based on real life. The screenwriters visited hospitals in Los Angeles in search of interesting cases to include in the show, dramatizing them slightly according to the conventions of the genre. For example, at the beginning of the series, a child is operated on because a hanger is stuck in their throat. The staff of one city hospital actually encountered this situation. In the series, this case was made more emotional by adding bleeding and tracheotomy procedures. In reality, it was much simpler—the foreign object was carefully removed from the child's throat, and that was it.
  • Dr. Kerry Weaver, played by Laura Innes, limps and walks with a cane from her very first appearance on screen. It is only in the 11th season that the viewer learns Weaver suffers from congenital hip dysplasia. In 2006, shortly before Innes left the project, the showrunners decided it was time for Weaver to have surgery. This happened because Innes began experiencing leg problems due to the constant limping in front of the camera.
