What's left behind the scenes
- The mother of General Sam Houston (1793-1863, the American politician and statesman for whom the city of Houston is named) was born Elizabeth Houston. Her parents (Houston's maternal grandparents) are the great-great-great-great-great-great-grandparents of Bill Paxton, making the actor a distant relative of the character he portrays.
- Before filming for the miniseries, Jeffrey Dean Morgan ate only canned food (one can per day) and lost 18 kg so that his appearance would better match that of a character suffering from tuberculosis.
- In the moment when Diff kills his wounded horse (at the 50th minute of the 4th episode), after the shot to the head, Diff lies on the horse, hugging it around the neck, and the horse is still breathing.
