What's left behind the scenes
- Principal photography took place at Elstree Studios, with some scenes filmed at estates in English counties. Chalfield Manor in Wiltshire provided the facades for the Hamleigh family home. Interior shots were filmed at Levens Hall in Cumbria. Wentworth Woodhouse, a large estate in South Yorkshire, was used as Camnor Towers, the estate of Lord Camnor. Some National Trust properties were closed to the public specifically for filming.
- The miniseries is based on the novel "Wives and Daughters" (1865) by Elizabeth Gaskell.
