Berke Landers is a high school student whose long relationship with Allison ends when she takes up with Striker, the school's most popular guy. Unable to accept the breakup, Berke decides to win her back by joining the spring musical, a production of A Midsummer Night's Dream that Allison is also part of. Kelly, the younger sister of his best friend Felix, helps him through the tryouts and rehearsals.
The film is a teen comedy directed by Tommy O'Haver, the first of four features he made, followed by Ella Enchanted, An American Crime and The Most Hated Woman in America. R. Lee Fleming Jr. wrote the screenplay, and the cast is led by Ben Foster as Berke, Kirsten Dunst as Kelly, Melissa Sagemiller as Allison, Shane West as Striker, Colin Hanks as Felix and Sisqó as Dennis Wallace, with 64 credited cast members and 144 credited crew.
Released in March 2001, the film runs 87 minutes and was produced by Miramax, Ignite Entertainment and Morpheus on a budget of 22 million dollars. It earned about 20 million dollars worldwide, less than its production cost. On IMDb it holds 5.7 out of 10 from 21,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.6 out of 10 from 320 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 5.3 out of 10 from 65 reviews, placing audience and critics close together.
