Short description
Detroit police sergeant Jericho Jackson, known as "Action" for his aggressive style, has been relegated to desk duty since an arrest he handled too roughly. When two union leaders are killed by hired gunmen, Jackson learns from an old friend that the businessman Peter Dellaplane ordered the hits. After the friend is also murdered, Jackson sets out to bring Dellaplane down, even as he is pursued by fellow officers on a fabricated charge. His only ally is Sydney Ash, a singer who is involved with the industrialist.
This 1988 action comedy was the first film directed by Craig R. Baxley, who went on to make Dark Angel, Stone Cold and several later features. Carl Weathers stars as Jackson, with Craig T. Nelson as Dellaplane, Vanity as Sydney Ash, Sharon Stone as Patrice Dellaplane, Thomas F. Wilson as Officer Kornblau and Robert Davi as Tony Moretti. Robert Reneau wrote the screenplay, and Joel Silver produced for Silver Pictures with Lorimar Film Entertainment.
Made for about 7 million dollars, the film took in roughly 20 million worldwide, a solid return on its budget. Audience ratings sit in the middle on both platforms, 5.6 out of 10 on IMDb from around 14,000 votes and 5.5 out of 10 on TMDB from about 300 votes, while critics rated it lower at 4 out of 10 across 16 reviews. Its 96-minute runtime keeps the focus on action set pieces rather than plot.
What's left behind the scenes
- When filming began, Carl Weathers was 39 years old. He joked that due to the demanding shooting schedule he had aged to over 60, jokingly blaming director Craig R. Baxley for it.
- When Carl Weathers and Vanity jump out of the hotel window onto the roof of his convertible while escaping the police, you can notice mattresses covered with a black cloth inside the car upon landing. Additionally, a camera platform, also covered with a mattress, can be seen.
- The idea for the film came to Carl Weathers on the set of John McTiernan’s film “Predator” (1987) when he and producer Joel Silver were discussing how much they both enjoyed “blaxploitation” films (films geared towards a Black urban audience, a genre that originated at the turn of the 1970s). After Weathers discussed the same topic with a member of the Australian film crew, the future film's title was born.
