Material Girls follows Ava and Tanzie Marchetta, sisters and heirs to the cosmetics company their late father built. They live on the proceeds of the family fortune until a scandal involving one of the company's flagship products damages its reputation and their money is cut off. Forced out of their usual surroundings, the sisters set out to clear their father's name and regain control of the business.
Martha Coolidge directed the film, which sits between The Prince & Me and I'll Find You in her filmography. Hilary Duff and Haylie Duff star as Tanzie and Ava, with María Conchita Alonso, Anjelica Huston, Lukas Haas and Marcus Coloma among the credited cast of 23. Hilary Duff also produced, alongside David Faigenblum and Guy Oseary. The screenplay is credited to Amy Rardin, Jessica O'Toole and John Quaintance.
Released in August 2006, the film had a budget of 15 million USD and took about 11 million USD worldwide, so it did not recover its costs at the box office. Reception was weak: on IMDb it holds 4 out of 10 from roughly 23,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.3 out of 10 from 489 votes. A critics' rating of 3 out of 10 from 54 reviews places it below even the modest audience scores.
