Short description

Carl Allen has settled into a routine of refusing everything, turning down invitations from friends and keeping to himself. When he attends a self-help seminar, its speaker challenges him to say yes to every opportunity that comes his way, and Carl takes the pledge seriously. The change brings him new experiences, a promotion at work and a relationship with a woman named Allison, but he soon finds that agreeing to everything carries its own complications.

Peyton Reed directed the film, which sits between The Break-Up and Ant-Man in his filmography. Jim Carrey leads the cast as Carl, with Zooey Deschanel as Allison, Bradley Cooper as his friend Peter, and John Michael Higgins, Rhys Darby and Danny Masterson in supporting roles. Nicholas Stoller, Jarrad Paul and Andrew Mogel wrote the screenplay, and Richard D. Zanuck and David Heyman produced.

Released in December 2008, the film cost about 70 million dollars and took in roughly 223 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.8 from around 404,000 votes, and on TMDB it stands at 6.7 from more than 7,500 votes. A critics' score of 5.6 from 152 reviews places it below the audience ratings. The 104-minute comedy was a British and American co-production.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The lead actors, Jim Carrey and Zooey Deschanel, were born on the same day, January 17th.
  • Jim Carrey specifically began studying the Korean language with teacher John Song for the role, in order to realistically portray a high level of proficiency in the language in the film.
  • During the filming of the bar scene, Jim Carrey broke three ribs.
  • Jim Carrey performed the jump from the bridge with a harness himself.
  • The film is based on the biographical book by Danny Wallace, a British writer, producer, and journalist, who spent 6 months answering only "YES." The writer himself appeared in an episodic role in the "bachelorette party" scene.
  • Jim Carrey declined a 'standard' fee for the film and agreed to a 'percentage' of the box office revenue.
  • The ringtone on Karl's phone and the song playing while Karl rides his motorcycle is the Journey song – “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart).”
  • When Pete calls Karl on the phone and then comes to see him, Karl is watching the film “Saw” (2004).
  • The fight scene near the bar takes place in the same location as the fight with the bullies in the film “Bruce Almighty” (2003).
  • Jim Carrey performed the rope jump from the same bridge as the characters in the series “Scrubs” (2001-2010) in one of the episodes.
