Clara and Eleanor Webb arrive in a faded coastal town with no money and a secret they have kept for about two centuries. The two women pass as sisters, though they are mother and daughter, and both survive by drinking human blood. Clara is outgoing and practical, drawing the attention of men wherever she goes; Eleanor is withdrawn and writes down her private thoughts instead of sharing them. Their situation changes when Noel, a lonely man who has inherited a rundown guesthouse called the Byzantium, offers them a place to stay. Eleanor grows close to Frank, a young waiter, and eventually tells him what she really is, while Clara makes her own arrangements in town. The disclosure sets off consequences for the newcomers, and the past the women fled begins to catch up with them.
Neil Jordan directed the film, the thirteenth of fifteen features in his filmography by release order, following Ondine and preceding Greta. Moira Buffini wrote the screenplay, and Stephen Woolley, Alan Moloney and Elizabeth Karlsen produced. Gemma Arterton plays Clara, Saoirse Ronan plays Eleanor, and Sam Riley, Jonny Lee Miller, Caleb Landry Jones and Daniel Mays appear among the cast of twenty-four, with 189 credited crew members. Made on a budget of around 10 million dollars, the film has a critics' rating of 6.4 out of 10 from 118 reviews and a score of 6.3 out of 10 on TMDB from 992 votes, placing the two measures close together.
