Short description
Elle Woods has left Harvard behind and is now a lawyer at a major firm, preparing for her wedding and hoping to make partner. When she learns that her chihuahua Bruiser's mother is being used in cosmetic testing by a client of her own firm, she takes up the cause of animal rights, loses her job, and travels to Washington, D.C., to push for legislation against animal testing. Sally Field plays Victoria Rudd, a congresswoman whose staff Elle joins, with Regina King as Grace Rossiter, Jennifer Coolidge returning as Paulette, and Bruce McGill and Dana Ivey in supporting roles.
The 2003 comedy is the sequel to Legally Blonde and the second feature directed by Charles Herman-Wurmfeld, following Kissing Jessica Stein the previous year. Kate Kondell wrote the screenplay, and Marc Platt and David Nicksay produced. Reese Witherspoon again leads as Elle.
Made for about 45 million dollars, the film took in roughly 125 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 4.8 out of 10 from around 79,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.7 out of 10 from about 1,800 votes. A critics' rating of 5 out of 10 across 157 reviews sits between those two audience figures, closer to the TMDB score than to the IMDb one.
What's left behind the scenes
- Reese Witherspoon's hairstyle was very short, as required for her role in Andy Tennant's comedy 'Sweet Alabama' (2002), so the actress wore a variety of wigs in this film.
- Initially, Jessica Coffield (Margo) and Alanna Ubach (Serena) were intended to appear only in the opening scene, but as filming progressed, these roles and their involvement in the script were expanded.
- Reese Witherspoon was pregnant during the filming of this movie.
- The filmmakers requested 63 pairs of shoes for the film from Malaysian designer and fashion designer Jimmy Choo, all of which were made from artificial materials (in accordance with rules of humane treatment of animals, which is central to the film's storyline). With his permission, Reese Witherspoon took all the shoes and designer clothes specially created for the film after filming.
- Reese Witherspoon's character's pink suit and pillbox hat are a reference to Jacqueline Kennedy's (1929-1994) iconic suit.
- The scene on the steps of the Capitol building was filmed on the steps of the Utah State Capitol in Salt Lake City. The scene inside the Capitol building was filmed in the Illinois State Capitol in Springfield. Buildings in both Salt Lake City and Springfield were specifically built to resemble the national Capitol building.
