Brad and Caroline Sexton are a wealthy New York couple whose marriage has gone stale and whose finances are in trouble. When their accountant embezzles millions and leaves them facing a large tax debt, they flee the city rather than face arrest. They end up in an Amish community in Pennsylvania, where they pass themselves off as long-lost relatives of a local family and try to blend in while hiding from the authorities.

Adapting to Amish life means giving up the comforts they are used to and taking on manual work and a strict moral code. The experience gradually changes how the couple see each other and what matters to them. Tim Allen and Kirstie Alley play the leads, with Jay O. Sanders, Michael Lerner, Wayne Knight and Larry Miller among the supporting cast. Bryan Spicer directed the film, his second feature after Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie (1995), from a screenplay by Jana Howington and Steve LuKanic. Sid Sheinberg produced with Bill and Jonathan Sheinberg.

Released in December 1997, the film had a budget of 35 million US dollars and returned about 32 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 5.8 out of 10 from 11,883 votes, and on TMDB 6 out of 10 from 268 votes, while a critics' rating stands at 3.8 out of 10 from 23 reviews, indicating reviewers were far less receptive than general audiences.
