Short description
Roy "Tin Cup" McAvoy is a former golf prodigy whose talent never translated into a career. Now living in a trailer in a small Texas town, he scrapes by giving lessons and drinking beer, his days of competition behind him. When a sports psychologist named Molly Griswold comes to him for golf lessons, Roy falls for her, only to learn that she is involved with David Simms, the successful professional who was once his rival. Determined to prove himself, Roy sets out to qualify for the U.S. Open, with his loyal friend and caddie Romeo at his side.
Ron Shelton directed and co-wrote the film with John Norville. It followed Shelton's Bull Durham and White Men Can't Jump, and its third spot in his filmography places it among the sports comedies he became known for. Kevin Costner plays Roy, with Rene Russo as Molly, Don Johnson as David, and Cheech Marin as Romeo. The production, from Warner Bros. Pictures and Regency Enterprises, cost 45 million dollars and returned 54 million worldwide.
