White Squall
Short description
In 1960, a group of teenage boys joins a school at sea aboard the Albatross, a sailing ship commanded by the experienced Captain Christopher Sheldon. The voyage is meant to last several months and to turn privileged, unruly students into a disciplined crew, with stops in the Caribbean and the South Pacific. As the boys learn to work the rigging and live together, rivalries give way to friendship and a sense of shared purpose. On the journey home the ship sails into a sudden, violent white squall, and the ordeal at sea becomes a fight to survive.
Ridley Scott directed the film, the ninth of the thirty-four features he has made in chronological order, following 1492: Conquest of Paradise and preceding G.I. Jane. Todd Robinson wrote the screenplay, and Mimi Polk Gitlin and Rocky Lang produced it, with Jeff Bridges as Sheldon, Caroline Goodall as his wife Alice, John Savage as McCrea, and Scott Wolf, Jeremy Sisto and Ryan Phillippe among the young crew. The film was made for about 38 million USD and took roughly 10 million USD worldwide.
On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.3 out of 10 from around 420 votes, a modest response from the audience. The film blends an adventure story with a drama about responsibility and growing up, set largely on the open ocean.
What's left behind the scenes
- According to the original script, the schoolgirls were supposed to be French. It was decided to change the script when the casting director, who was searching for a suitable actress who spoke French and looked French, came across the Dane Camilla Overbye Roos. He intended to cast her in the film, but it turned out that the girl did not speak French. It was Overbye Roos who suggested changing the French girls to Danes. He then asked her to help find suitable Danish girls (which was done quite quickly), and he sent the photos and screen tests of the girls she suggested to director Ridley Scott, who did not object to the changes.
- The film featured a vessel named the 'Eye of the Wind,' built in 1911. This same vessel was also used in Randal Kleiser's melodrama 'The Blue Lagoon' (1980), Ted Nicolaou's action film ' Savage Island' (1985), and Daryl Duke's (1929-2006) adventure film ' taipan' (1986).
