Psycho II

Released in 1983, Psycho II continues the story of Norman Bates two decades after the events of Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho. Norman is declared sane after years in a psychiatric hospital and returns to the family motel and the house on the hill, despite the objections of Lila Loomis, sister of one of his victims. A psychiatrist accompanies him as he tries to rebuild an ordinary life, taking work at a local diner and befriending a young waitress named Mary. Before long, messages and a voice that seem to belong to his mother pull him back toward the past, and new violence follows.

Richard Franklin directed the film, the fourth of the seven features listed in his filmography, arriving between Roadgames and Cloak & Dagger. Tom Holland wrote the screenplay, and Hilton A. Green produced. Anthony Perkins reprises the role of Norman, with Meg Tilly as Mary, Vera Miles returning as Lila Loomis, and Robert Loggia, Dennis Franz and Hugh Gillin among the supporting cast.

Made for around 5 million dollars, the film took roughly 35 million worldwide, a strong return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 6.6 out of 10 from over 30,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.5 from a much smaller number of voters. A critics' rating of 5.6 from 37 reviews puts professional notices somewhat below the generally moderate audience scores.
