Short description
Iron Sky is a Finnish-German-Australian science fiction comedy set in an alternate present. As World War II ended, a group of Nazis escaped Germany for a secret base in Antarctica and then traveled by spacecraft to the far side of the Moon. There they built a hidden military colony and spent decades assembling an invasion fleet, waiting for the right moment to return and conquer the Earth. In 2018, a crewed American lunar mission stumbles onto the base, and the encounter sets the Nazi plan in motion ahead of schedule.
The film was directed by Timo Vuorensola, his first feature, from a screenplay he wrote with Michael Kalesniko. Julia Dietze plays Renate Richter, Christopher Kirby plays the astronaut James Washington, and Götz Otto, Udo Kier, Peta Sergeant and Stephanie Paul round out the main cast, which numbers several dozen credited performers. Produced on a budget of about 8 million dollars, it was made partly through crowdfunding and took roughly 10 million dollars worldwide.
Audience response was mixed: on IMDb it holds 5.9 from around 99,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.7 from over 1,800 votes, while a critics' rating of 4.5 from 43 reviews sits lower. Vuorensola returned to the story with Iron Sky: The Coming Race in 2019, followed by Jeepers Creepers: Reborn, 97 Minutes and Altered.

- Supporters of the film online contributed $1,500,000 to the budget as investors.
- The scene depicting the 'trashing' of a US presidential campaign headquarters replicates, shot-for-shot, the well-known viral meme video “Hitler Finds Out About…”, which overlays comedic subtitles onto a scene from the film “The Bunker”.
- To film the shot of a Nazi machine gun firing in close-up, the front part of the German weapon was welded to a genuine Kalashnikov assault rifle to prevent malfunctions.
- Working outside the Hollywood system, the creators produced 800 computer graphics shots, approved by The Hollywood Reporter, for $1.2 million (for comparison, the budget for computer special effects for "Transformers" is approaching $50 million).
- The US President (according to the film's chronology – Obama's successor) is an obvious parody of Republican Sarah Palin, the former Governor of Alaska, known for her shocking statements and poor geographical knowledge.
- The idea of a treacherous attack by the Nazi space fleet on Earth came to screenwriter Jārmo Puskala in a sauna.
- The names of the Nazi spacecraft types – "Gold of the Rhine," "Twilight of the Gods," "Valkyrie," and "Siegfried" – are taken from the titles of Richard Wagner's operas from the "Der Ring des Nibelungen" cycle; Laibach's music for the film is also based on themes from Wagnerian operas.
