Short description
Tom is a successful businessman who dates freely and avoids commitment, and his closest relationship is with Hannah, a friend he has known for a decade. Their friendship has stayed strictly platonic, with Hannah hoping to marry while Tom keeps things casual. When Hannah travels to Scotland for work and returns engaged to a wealthy Scotsman named Colin, Tom realizes how much she means to him. She asks him to serve as her "maid" of honor, and he accepts, hoping to stop the wedding and win her for himself before it is too late.
Paul Weiland directed the film, which he made after City Slickers II: The Legend of Curly's Gold and Roseanna's Grave. Deborah Kaplan, Harry Elfont and Adam Sztykiel wrote the screenplay, and Neal H. Moritz produced it. Patrick Dempsey leads as Tom, opposite Michelle Monaghan as Hannah, with Kevin McKidd as Colin. The supporting cast includes Kadeem Hardison, Chris Messina and Richmond Arquette, among 53 credited performers.
Released in 2008, the film runs 101 minutes and was produced as a British and American co-production by Columbia Pictures and Original Film, on a budget of about 40 million dollars. It went on to take roughly 106 million dollars worldwide, a return that comfortably exceeded its cost. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.9 from around 80,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.5 from roughly 1,800 votes. A film critics' rating of 4.3 from 123 reviews places it below both audience scores.
