Johnnie To's Drug War follows a Hong Kong drug trafficker, Timmy Choi, who is taken into custody in mainland China after a car accident. Facing a possible death sentence, he agrees to cooperate with Captain Zhang Lei of the narcotics squad and give up his associates. Zhang's unit pursues the network Choi identifies, while the question of whether the information is genuine, and whether Choi can be trusted, hangs over the operation as it moves toward its targets.
The film is the twenty-first of twenty-three features To has directed in chronological order, coming between Life Without Principle in 2011 and Blind Detective in 2013. He produced it with Wai Ka-Fai, and shares writing credits with Yau Nai-Hoi and Ray Chan Wai-Ban. Louis Koo plays Choi opposite Sun Honglei as Zhang, with Huang Yi, Wallace Chung Hon-Leung, Guo Tao and Li Jing among a credited cast of fifty-eight. It runs 107 minutes and was made as a Hong Kong and mainland Chinese co-production. Released in November 2012, it took in roughly 25 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7 out of 10 from around 11,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.9 out of 10 from roughly 315 votes; a critics' rating of 8.1 from 53 reviews places professional assessment above the audience scores.
