Set in Tokyo in 1964, as the city undergoes rapid change ahead of the Olympics, the story follows the residents of a working-class neighbourhood on Third Street as they face new beginnings. Ryunosuke Chagawa, a writer of adventure serials, is married to Hiromi and raising his adopted son Junnosuke while the family expects a baby. His work is losing popularity, and the arrival of a rival author in the magazine that publishes his stories threatens his career. Meanwhile, Norifumi Suzuki and his wife Tomoe have expanded their auto repair shop, where Mutsuko Hoshino works as the chief mechanic. Mutsuko has fallen for a young doctor she sees passing each day, though he may not be everything he seems, and a telegram Chagawa has hidden raises further questions.
The film is directed by Takashi Yamazaki, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Ryota Kosawa. It is the fourth of the eighteen films he has directed in chronological order, following Space Battleship Yamato and preceding The Eternal Zero. Hidetaka Yoshioka plays Chagawa, with Shinichi Tsutsumi as Suzuki, Koyuki as Hiromi, Maki Horikita as Mutsuko, Hiroko Yakushimaru as Tomoe and Tomokazu Miura as Dr. Takuma, among a credited cast of twenty-one.
Released in Japan in January 2012, the film runs 142 minutes and is a comedy-drama produced with backing from Robot Communications, TOHO, dentsu and Nippon Television Network Corporation. It took about 35 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.1 from 822 votes, and on TMDB 7.2 from 23 votes.
