A British zoo becomes the property of an unscrupulous media tycoon, who sends his marketing executive and his son to assess the place while installing a former policeman, Rollo Lee, as its new director. Under pressure to turn a profit and keep the zoo open, Rollo introduces a policy admitting only the most dangerous animals, on the theory that fierce creatures draw crowds. The keepers, led by an insect specialist nicknamed Bugsy, are not willing to go along with a plan that would remove the animals they care for, and the staff's resistance complicates the owners' intentions for the site.
The film is a comedy directed by Robert Young and Fred Schepisi. It sits between Young's The Worst Witch and Jane Eyre, and between Schepisi's I.Q. and Words and Pictures. William Goldman, John Cleese and Iain Johnstone wrote the screenplay, and Cleese produced it with Michael Shamberg. Cleese plays Rollo, Jamie Lee Curtis plays Willa Weston, Kevin Kline appears as Vince and Rod McCain, and Michael Palin plays Bugsy, with Ronnie Corbett and Carey Lowell also in the cast.
Released in 1997 and running 93 minutes, the film had a budget of 25 million USD and took 9 million USD worldwide, a return well below its cost. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.2/10 from 406 votes.
