Short description
Sacha is a carefree jazz pianist who avoids emotional ties and professional responsibilities. Charlotte is an independent professional and mother of three children who has no interest in new romances after two previous marriages. Despite their opposing lifestyles and views on relationships, the two find they complement each other. Their connection is threatened by Charlotte's former husband, a powerful industrialist who uses his influence to force Sacha out of France and into a job in New York.
Directed by James Huth, the film arrived in 2012 as his fourth feature, following Lucky Luke and two earlier projects. Huth also co-wrote the screenplay with Sonja Shillito. The lead roles are played by Gad Elmaleh and Sophie Marceau, supported by a credited cast of 35.
Produced in France by Eskwad and Pathé, the movie had a budget of 15 million USD and earned 17 million USD at the worldwide box office. Audience reception is moderately positive, with a rating of 6.5/10 from 5,800 votes on IMDb and a 6.1/10 from 444 votes on TMDB.
What's left behind the scenes
- For the role of the hero Gad Elmaleh's Jewish grandmother, director James Yut cast his own 94-year-old cousin. His initial search for an elderly actress with a suitable accent proved unsuccessful.
- Director James Yut, who had previously shot four full-length feature films, had never worked with child actors before. According to him, it was his unpreparedness for this that held him back from starting work on the project for some time.
- Sasha and Charlotte's apartment was actually built in a studio. Director James Yut said this was done to give the film a certain charm and make it look like a 1950s American comedy, inspired by directors such as Billy Wilder, Frank Capra, and George Cukor.
- The scenes in New York were originally planned to be filmed in Montreal, Canada, according to the script. Everything changed at the insistence of producer Richard Grant, who also decided that it should be raining during the first scene.
- The hands in the opening credits belong to a pianist named Pierre Yves Plat, not Gad Elmaleh.
- Sonia Shillito (James Yut's wife and co-writer) suggested casting Gad Elmaleh as Sasha.
- The film debuted in second place at the French box office, after "Ice Age: Continental Drift" (2012).
- Throughout the film, there are several references to the animated film 'The Aristocats' (1970). Co-writer and director James Gray believes that some may see this film as a remake of the classic Disney cartoon.
