Short description

Speed Zone is a 1989 American action comedy about an illegal cross-country car race. When the authorities declare the Cannonball Run illegal, police chief Spiro T. Edsel arrests the professional drivers on the eve of the event. Determined not to cancel, the organizers recruit a replacement field of amateur and inexperienced racers, who set off from Washington toward Los Angeles while police across the country try to shut the race down.

The ensemble includes John Candy as Charlie, a driver working on behalf of a man named Leo, with Donna Dixon as Tiffany, an aspiring actress riding as his co-driver. Matt Frewer plays Alec, Joe Flaherty plays Vic, Tim Matheson plays Jack and Mimi Kuzyk plays Heather. The film was directed by Jim Drake, following his 1987 debut Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol, from a screenplay by Michael Short and produced by Murray Shostak.

Speed Zone was released on April 21, 1989, with a runtime of 94 minutes. It was made on a budget of 18 million USD and grossed 3 million USD worldwide, a fraction of its cost. On IMDb it holds a rating of 4.5/10 from around 4,000 votes, and on TMDB it also stands at 4.5/10, from 97 votes, indicating that audiences have rated it poorly by both measures.
