A botched robbery at an art gallery sets a malevolent Djinn free when a thief named Morgana accidentally shatters the gem holding him. Rather than flee, the Djinn lets himself be sent to prison and takes up a reign of terror among the inmates, granting their wishes in ways that twist their hopes and claim their souls. Morgana, who witnesses glimpses of what becomes of his victims, searches for a way to stop him, with help from a young priest familiar with the Djinn's legend.
Jack Sholder directed and wrote the film, the sixth feature in his directing career and the second entry in the Wishmaster series. Andrew Divoff plays the Djinn, called Demerest, with Holly Fields as Morgana, Paul Johansson as Gregory, and Bokeem Woodbine among a credited cast of 28. Tony Amatullo produced for Artisan Entertainment and CTV International, with a credited crew of 85.
Made for a modest 3 million dollars and running 96 minutes, the film has drawn mixed-to-negative responses: 5.1 out of 10 on IMDb from around 11,000 votes and 5.7 out of 10 on TMDB from over 300 votes. A critics' rating of 3.1 out of 10 from 11 reviews sits below the audience scores.
