Someone Like You...

Jane Goodale works in New York booking guests for a popular daytime talk show, and she has set her sights on success in her career and her love life alike. When Ray Brown, the programme's new executive producer, pursues her, a romance quickly develops. It ends abruptly when Ray, without a clear explanation, breaks things off, leaving Jane to search for a reason behind his behaviour. Her search leads her to compare men with animals, and she turns the theory into an anonymous magazine column that wins her a wide readership, even as her womanising roommate Eddie Alden becomes her unwitting subject.

Tony Goldwyn directed the film, his second feature after A Walk on the Moon, from a screenplay by Elizabeth Chandler; Lynda Obst produced. Ashley Judd plays Jane, with Greg Kinnear as Ray, Hugh Jackman as Eddie, Marisa Tomei as her friend Liz and Ellen Barkin as talk show host Diane Roberts. The credited cast numbers twenty-one.

Released in March 2001, the film runs 97 minutes and is a romantic comedy from Fox 2000 Pictures. Made for about 23 million dollars, it took roughly 39 million dollars worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds 6.1 out of 10 from around 29,000 votes, and on TMDB 6 out of 10 from some 424 votes. A critics' score of 5.4 out of 10 from 119 reviews places it below both audience figures, so opinions from reviewers were less favourable than those of viewers.
